Domain details

Your new domain is currently registered in my account on Namecheap.com. I’ve found them to be reliable and inexpensive. Unless you have an alternative service already in mind, create a free account with Namecheap. There’s a small fee for transferring the domain, so let’s wait until they run a sale, such as their frequent 98 cent transfers. At that point, I’ll release the lock and give you the transfer codes. Until then, I’ll have to make any Domain Name Server changes, such as adding subdomains for mail, hosted blogs, media, Google Apps, etc. I’ll cover the cost of the transfer, but I believe the payment will need to go through your account.

I subscribe to the older notion of separating my registrar/DNS service and my host. That way if anything goes wrong with the host (such as suddenly going out of business) I can easily change my DNS settings and point to a new Web server. Many people just get the whole thing from one outfit, which is OK if you’re dealing with a sophisticated company that caters to savvy Web site builders, such as Host Gator or Dreamhost.com. Beware of GoDaddy, Intuit and other outfits that don’t give you full access to your DNS settings or limit the applications you can run on your site.
